Why you're still stuck

I Understand My Patterns. Why Haven't I Changed? Therapy, Self-Help and Intensive Coaching Compared

By Asha Jacob, anxiety coach for professionals · 330+ clients worldwide · October 2026

You've done the therapy. You've read the books and watched the videos. You can explain why you shrink around authority, people-please, or keep everyone at arm's length. And you still do it.

When people describe these problems, the usual advice is "see a therapist" or "read this book." Both are genuinely useful, for different things. There's a third option most people don't hear about, and it's built for someone who has already learned a lot about themselves and still hasn't changed. Here's what each one is good for, and how to tell which you need.

What therapy is good for

Therapy is the right place for clinical conditions, trauma treatment and crisis. It's also valuable for ongoing maintenance: having someone steady to talk to and process life with, week after week, for as long as you need. If you're struggling to function day to day, or you're not safe, start with a licensed therapist.

What books, videos and courses are good for

They're affordable and work at your own pace, and they can be very helpful. Most of my clients learned a lot from them. But they depend on your own insight. You have to work out which parts apply to you and how, and without an outside perspective it's very hard to see your own blind spots. You end up with a lot of information about people in general and no clear picture of yourself.

What intensive 1-on-1 coaching does differently

My coaching is for people who have already done a lot of learning and still feel stuck. It's intensive: 8 weeks, a 90-minute call every week, and unlimited text and voice messages between calls, so we can talk through what comes up in your week and how to put what we discuss into practice.

It starts with one idea

Most of what keeps you stuck comes down to this. You aren't seeing things the way they are. You're processing them through scripts you built earlier in life, about yourself, about other people, and about what happens when you speak up.

Those scripts don't change with affirmations, or with telling yourself to do the healthy thing. They change when you see your situation so clearly that you think, "Oh. That makes so much sense." That's when change happens. You don't speak up because you should. You speak up because it makes sense to you.

What we do together

I spot the patterns and blind spots that are almost impossible to see from the inside, and we work through perspective shifts together until the way you see your situation actually changes. How we do that is different for every person, because it's built around your history. The best way to see what it would look like for you is a discovery call.

Who my coaching isn't for

How to decide

If you need treatment, crisis support, or a steady person to talk to over the long term, choose therapy. If you want to learn at your own pace and cost matters most, books and videos are a good start. If you've already learned a lot and still can't see what keeps you stuck, that's what my 8-week program is for. I've worked with 330+ clients this way, mostly professionals like physicians, engineers, nurses, managers and founders. You can read what some of them say or see the program details.

The part that matters most: feeling understood

Most of my clients have spent years explaining themselves and still feeling like the other person didn't quite get it. In this work you shouldn't have to. When you share something, you should feel that I know what you mean, including the parts you didn't say out loud. Clients often tell me it's the first time they've felt really seen.

We find out whether that's there on the first call. If you come away thinking, "She gets it. She speaks my language," the program is likely to work for you. If we're not on the same wavelength, it wouldn't be effective, and I'll tell you honestly.

Questions people ask me about this

I've done therapy and understand my patterns. Why haven't I changed?

Often because what you've learned hasn't been put together into one clear picture of how you work, and the patterns you can't see yourself are still running. The pattern also fires in real life, in the meeting or on the phone with your parents, when you're usually on your own. Change comes from seeing the blind spots, having a clear way of reading your situations, and support between calls when the pattern shows up.

Should I see a therapist or a coach for anxiety and people-pleasing?

If you're dealing with a clinical condition, trauma symptoms or a crisis, or you want ongoing support and someone to talk to, a licensed therapist is the right choice. If you're functioning well, have already done a lot of learning about yourself, and want to understand your patterns and change how you show up at work and at home, intensive coaching can be a better fit.

How do I know if a coach is right for me?

Pay attention to the first call. If the coach asks about your situation and what they say back makes you think "this person gets it, she speaks my language," the work is likely to go well. If you find yourself adding caveats and re-explaining, it probably won't. That fit matters more than any credential or method.

What happens in your 8-week coaching program?

It's 8 weeks of 1-on-1 work: a 90-minute call every week plus unlimited text and voice messages between calls. We find the patterns and blind spots you can't see yourself and work through perspective shifts together, so change comes from things finally making sense to you. How that looks depends on your history, so the best way to find out is a discovery call.
